UN-backed weak Government of Somalia, has on Thursday released a statement in which it expressed concerns over the on-going Ukraine crisis which forced former President Viktor Yanukovich to leave office, after weeks of angry protests.
The Press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was stated that ‘’it is concerned by the deteriorating situation in Ukraine and urge all sides to sit together and work solution’’.
Somalia has lacked an effective central government since president Mohamed Siad Barre was overthrown in 1991. The nation has been plagued ever since with natural disasters such as drought, and around half a million people died in the Somali famines of 1992 and 2011.
Over the past two decades, one of the major impediments to ending the turmoil has been the lack of strong, non-partisan leadership, with the country being torn apart by warring factions.
‘’We in Somalia know too well the need to resolve all issues of conflict through dialogue and peaceful means of reconciliation, and we are ready to offer our assistance on these issues.’’ the ministry said.
It called for an immediate deployment of International monitors and observers ‘’to provide impartial reporting and transparency observance of the situation on the ground in Crimea and Eastern Ukraine.’’
The Ministry underlined that the invasion of Russian troops in Crimea region ‘’poses a serious threat to international Peace and Security’’. It added that: ‘’it will have a profound Russia’s international Standing’’.
Two days ago, Russia appointed a new ambassador to Somalia, a move to rebuild the diplomatic relations between both states. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud accepted his credentials.
Somalia has in various occasions been top listed as the world’s most ‘’failed’’ and ‘’Corrupted’’ states.
A strong 22,000-strong AMISOM peacekeeping force guard the Presidential Palace, Airport and Seaport of Mogadishu, as well helping the government to battle the Islamists who want to topple it.
Current Somali government has been surfaced with corruption allegations that caused the western donors to mistrust the leadership and postpone ‘’massive aids’’ pledged earlier.
The government is facing daily threats from Islamist militant group, who wants to form an Islam state in the country. The group has carried out fierce attacks in the Capital for the past two weeks.
One of the attacks was launched at the Presidential Palace Compound, that resulted to the death of guards and Senior government Officials. But the President at that time present at the Palace was unharmed.
