Puntland President Dr Abdiwel Mohamed Ali has accused Somalia’s breakaway region of Somaliland of backing al-Shabab insurgents in Galgala mountain ranges, northeastern of Somalia.

Speaking in the port town of Bosaso, Mr Ali said that they have ‘’evidences’’ that Puntland’s enemies in Galgala hideouts are being funded and armed by the separatists region.

” We got evidences showing that the terrorists in Galgala are being funded by Somaliland, we will submit it to the International Community,” he said.

Last week, President Silanyo paid a secret visit to Lasqoray district that caused tension between the two states. Puntland deployed troops to the borders of Sanaag region.

A day after his visit, Puntland’s commander of troops stationed in Galgala area late Col. Jama Afgudud was killed in a ambush carried out by the al-Shabab militants.

On Monday, UN Special envoy to Somalia ambassador Nicholas Kay called for ‘’maximum caution’’ between the two sides, while delivering his speech during the 425th meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council held in Addis Ababa.

‘’I am concerned by the military tensions between Puntland and Somaliland in the Sool and Sanaag regions. I call for maximum caution and avoidance of confrontation,’’ said the UN Envoy.

It’s not the first time Puntland has accused Somaliland of supporting al-Shabab militants in Galgala hideouts, Farole’s Administration accused Somaliland of providing safe havens to the terrorists after they were defeated by Puntland forces in 2010.

Puntland and Somaliland have had territorial disputes over the Sool and Sanag regions in the last couple years, in which some occasions troops from both sides clashed.
