Gunmen ambushed a bus carrying dozens of people in North-eastern Kenya, killing at least 28 passengers and wounding several others, reports confirm.

The attack took place in an area close to the Kenyan border with war-ravaged Somalia on the early morning hours of Saturday. The bus was travelling to the Kenyan capital, Nairobi from Mandera.

The motive for the attack is still unclear and no one has claimed responsibility. But Police officials have accused Somali militant group al-Shabaab.

Further reports claim that the killed are ‘’non-muslims’’ and were separated from the other passengers by the gunmen.

The Kenyan military crossed into Somalia in 2011 to battle Al-Shabaab, which it blamed for kidnapping tourists in the coastal region. In retaliation, the terrorist group has launched a spate of attacks, including targeting bustling bus stations with grenades.

Last year, militants stormed the Westgate Mall in Nairobi and held shoppers under siege for days. At least 67 people were killed.
