A plane carrying about 100 Somali nationals evacuated from Yemen landed in Mogadishu airport, the capital of Somalia on Monday evening, in the government’s first major mission to rescue citizens stranded in the strife-torn nation.
The evacuees, who mostly were women and small children, among others, reached home in a special flight by a Jordanian carrier.
“The security situation has worsened in Sanaa these days. There was almost constant bombing during daytime and explosions could also be heard at night … But the moment we embarked, my nerves were at ease,’’ said Hodan Abdi, a mother of three Children.
Somali Federal government officials welcomed the citizens at the airport and were later on transferred to designated makeshift camps.
Last week, the Federal government had announced to start the evacuation process while the ceasefire deal between the Saudi-led coalition and the Houthis rebels came into effective. The government was criticized for failing to speed up the evacuation process, with thousands of Somalis managing to arrive by boats in Puntland and Somaliland region without government’s assistance.
