Somalia: Somaliland makes U-turn on Somali returnees’ racial discriminatory policy

Authorities in the self-proclaimed republic state of Somaliland have made a U-turn on a recent decision to not host Somali returnees in their region.
Somaliland’s minister of Resettlement Ali Saeed Raigal said on Saturday that they will grant an entry to the Somali refugees escaping the violence in Yemen.
He added that the decision came after United Nations High Commissioner (UNHCR) and International Organization for Migration (IOM) officials pledged to send back to their homes after arriving in the region.
‘’From now onwards the refugees without isolating them on their identity, race or tribe are permitted to come to Somaliland,’’ he said in a Press Conference.
Earlier on, Somalia’s Foreign affairs minister strongly criticized Somaliland’s racial discriminatory policies on Somali returnees and accused Somaliland of violating the Universal declaration of human rights and refugees.
Analysts believe that the U-turn of Somaliland on the blocking of Somali returnees is a result of huge criticism from its own people, entire Somali community across the globe and spotlight from the media.
