‘11 militants killed’ in fierce gun battle in SomaliaAt least eleven al-Shabaab militants were killed in a fierce gun battle with Somali government forces supported by the Ethiopian troops in Somalia’s South-western region, an official has said.
According to a government official, the al-Shabaab members were killed during an attack on a village in the Bakol region on Tuesday.
‘’ This militants were transporting other injured members of the group and we also captured five of the injured alive,’’ said the Deputy governor of Bakol region, Abdinur Mohamed.
The battles in the South-western region of Bakol are aimed at retaking villages and other remote areas which are still under the control of the al-Qaeda-linked militant group.
Reports say that the latest gun battle was involved by the Ethiopian Liyu Police who had crossed the border.
Somalia’s Defense Minister General Abdulkadir Dini admitted earlier this week that a number of Ethiopian forces who are not registered under the African Union mission in Somalia (AMISOM) were taking part in the fight against al-Shabaab.
African Union troops and the Somali government forces pushed al-Shabab out of last major strongholds in Southern Somalia last month, with the militants left only controlling urban areas.
