Somali militant group al-Shabaab on Saturday rammed an explosives-laden vehicle at a military training camp in Southern Somalia, killing at least 12 people, witnesses and officials said.
The attack took place in strategic port town of Kismayo which was a former stronghold for the al-Qaeda-linked extremists.
According to witnesses, most of the dead were soldiers who were being trained to fight against the militants which still control some parts of the country, though losing major territories.
Al-Shabaab officials claimed the responsibility of the attack and said that it had killed many senior military officials and soldiers.
The Kismayo University building, where the attack occurred is now used being used as a military base and training complex.
Somalia Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Ali condemned the attack in a Press statement, vowing that such attacks won’t stop from the country to move forward and attain its goals.
The al-Qaeda-linked extremists remain dangerous, unpredictable and bold, known for audacious and chilling attacks. Their fighters routinely target the Somali government in Mogadishu. The group has also sought to terrorize neighboring Kenya.
Last week, the regional Parliament of the Jubba administration voted for Ahmed Madobe as the leader for the autonomous state.
