A delegation from the European Union office in Somalia led by the Head of Political, Press and Information Section Tom Vens met Deputy Prime Minister Mohamed Omar Arte and several ministers of the Federal government in Mogadishu.
Talks concerned a wide range of topics such as security, education and finding solution to the youth migration crisis, with the European Union willing to support the government on those areas.
According to a Press release from the Prime Minister’s office, EU delegate pledged to help the government on creating opportunities for the youth in the country as a part of a solution for the migration.
Somalia Deputy Prime Minister stressed that the government will put more efforts on ways of encouraging the youth to stay in their homeland rather than putting their lives into risks.
Unemployment and poverty in Somalia have forced many young people to emigrate in search of a better life through perilous journeys across deserts and seas.
According to researches made, more than half of Somalia’s population is under 18, with the majority born after the overthrow of Mohammed Siad Barre in 1991, the pivotal event that sent the country spiralling into a deeper anarchy.
Analysts say that economic empowerment of young people in Somalia is vital. 70% of the population is under 30 but a lack of economic opportunities and one of the world’s highest unemployment rates is threatening the country’s road to stability.
