Uganda’s chief of defence forces, General Edward Katumba Wamala, flew to Mogadishu on a surprise visit Wednesday to ‘’assess the security situation’’, reaching out a day after al-Shabaab militants launched a deadly assault on the Ugandan troops in Somalia.
According to military sources, General Wamala is expected to hold talks with the African Union mission in Somalia (AMISOM) officials and Ugandan commanders in Mogadishu regarding the Janale town attack.
“He (is there) to assess the security situation and will be coming back as soon as possible,” deputy chief of Uganda defence forces was quoted by Kampala-based newspaper, daily monitor.
At least 50 troops were killed in the Tuesday attack, according to Western sources and a number of other troops have gone missing.
Since 2007 Ugandan troops have been deployed to Somalia, where the AU force helps the country’s Western-backed government to fight Islamist Al-Shabab armed fighters.
