A close relative of Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud and a Ministry official were assassinated in country’s capital, Mogadishu on Wednesday morning, witnesses confirm.
Liban Osman Ilmi, was gunned down in Wadajir neighbourhood by gunmen and escaped immediately from the scene. He was the nephew of Somalia President.
Reports say that he was one of the Health specialists operating in a Mogadishu hospital.
The second attack took place in the same neighbourhood, whereby gunmen shot dead a man working with the Ministry of Justice.
Hours later, Somalia militant group al-Shabaab claimed the responsibility of the assassinations.
Government assassinations are nothing new as al-Shabaab tactic, but now the extremists are taking aim at officials who are much more low-level, who often do not have the sort of bodyguards or other protection that top leaders do. Some of the victims have only the slimmest connections to the authorities.
