Bhopal played a key role in developing and streamlining educational system in Somalia, a country facing civil war for last many years, said President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohmud. He was in Bhopal on Saturday on a day-long visit to attend a special convocation ceremony of Barkatullah University, Bhopal.
Prez received his master’s degree 27 years after he completed his studies from here in 1987-88.
He said, “Masters’ degree done in 1987-88 from Bhopal helped in starting community schools and diploma schools in Somalia which has taken the shape of university in 2015.”
President Mohmud did his degree from National Institute for Technical Teacher’s Training and Research (NITTTR) which was then known as Technical Teachers Training Institute (TTTI). Visiting Bhopal after 29 years, Hassan Sheikh said, “Bhopal has completely changed.
Talking to TOI he said, “I am happy to see such development in Bhopal. New Bhopal has come up very well.” Calling himself lucky and blessed for completing M Tech degree from Bhopal, Hassan Sheikh said, “Had I not done the degree from Bhopal, it would have not been possible for me to even think of starting education in a country where everything else has collapsed.”
He started the first community school in Mogadishu in 1996. “There was a time when not a single child was attending school. In 1998, I started diploma schools. Now, we have a proper Somali national university which was re-launched in 2013. It all happened due to my experience while studying in Bhopal,” he said.
Talking about his meet with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said, “PM Modi assured me all necessary help. He agreed to provide 50,000 scholarships for students from Somalia and a 10 million dollar soft loan and 7 million dollar grants to Somalia. We are highly obliged.”
He appreciated Indian society and culture for living with peace despite having such a large and diverse population.
