The government of the People’s Republic of China has appointed an acting ambassador to Somalia after it declared that it’s re-opening its embassy in the war-torn nation.
A delegation led by the new envoy, Mr Wei Hongtian, arrived in Mogadishu on Wednesday and presented copy of his credentials to the Foreign Minister of the Somali Federal government.
Both sides had a meeting concerning on enhancing the bilateral relations and the new role China will take in rebuilding Somalia.
The acting ambassador is expected to present his original credentials to the Somali President.
Diplomatic relations between Somalia and Somalia were established shortly after Somalia gained its independence and China recognised it as a state in 1960.
The earlier contact between the two countries can be traced back to the 14th century when a group of Chinese traders had visited different parts of Somalia.
China announced earlier this week that it will reopen its embassy in Mogadishu that was closed in 1991 when chaos emerged in the Horn of Africa nation.
