Kenya to set up a Consulate in Somalia’s breakaway RegionThe Government of Kenya has announced that it will open a liaison office in the Somalia’s breakaway region of Somaliland.

It was announced by the Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Kibicho Karanja of Kenya, who said that the new office which will be opened in Hargeisa will work on the interests of the Kenyan citizens in the region and also between the two sides.

“It is true that we are opening a liaison office in Hargeisa and we have allowed Somaliland to open theirs in Nairobi. This however does not amount to a diplomatic consulate,” He was quoted saying in the Kenyan media.

Mr Karanja added that the breakaway region will also open a new office in the Kenyan capital Nairobi.

Somaliland which is not recognized marks this week the 23rd anniversary since it declared self-independent from Somalia back in 1991.

The Kenyan Official underlined that they informed their decision the Federal Government which is based in Mogadishu and there is no ‘’dispute’’.

“The Federal Government of Somalia is well briefed on the initiative as Kenya only recognises the existence of one government in Somalia’’

“There is no dispute about our decision to open the liaison office in Hargeisa we have discussed this matter with federal government authorities,” He was quoted again.

Elsewhere, reliable resources confirmed to Horseed Media that the Kenyan government is also planning to open a consulate in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland.
