Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud accepted credentials of newly-appointed ambassador of Italy Farbizio Marcelli on Sunday.

During the ceremony held in the Presidential Palace in the capital, Mogadishu the Italian ambassador thanked the Somali leader for approving his credentials.

Ambassador Marcelli underscored that Italy would continue to support combined efforts to strengthen stability and security in Somalia.

President Mohamud thanked the Italian government for supporting his government throughout and encouraged for the expansion of the bilateral relations between both sides.

“The Somali and Italian governments have a long relationship and I say to the new ambassador, strengthen that relationship. Even when Italy did not physically have an embassy here in Somalia, the commitment was still there and the projects to help the people continued,” he said.

Italy, which once colonised some parts of Somalia, is one of the European nations that provides significant support to the Federal government.
