Somalia: Bosaso residents donate land for IDP’s

Local residents of Bosaso have donated permanent land to the Bari Province administration for building shelters for the internal displaced persons (IDPs).
The handover ceremony was attended by the Bari governor Abdisamad Gallan, Mayor of Bosaso town Hassan Abdalla, Officials from Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), UNHCR and IDPs representatives.
The land – provided by the locals capacity is 2000×400 metres square. More than 2500 families will be able to get new homes upon completion of the project.
Abdirahman Hiirad, an official from the Norwegian Refugee Council said that the organization has continuously supported the displaced people with basic needs such as shelter, food and education.
NRC – is one of the humanitarian organizations operating in Somalia since 2004. According to the organization’s profile, its main priorities are:  shelter and infrastructure construction; housing, land and property issues; water, hygiene and sanitation; emergency education including youth education; protection; food security and livelihoods.
Mr Taban Hakim, head of the UNHCR Puntland Office who attended this event thanked the land donors. Mr Hakim further gave an example of the land donated for Local Integration in Galkayo where UNHCR has constructed 251 shelter for IDPs.

Bosaso Mayor, Hassan Abdalle praised the efforts of the Norwegian organization. He added that the administration is committed to help the IDPs.
Bosaso, a commercial hub for Somalia’s northern autonomous Puntland region, is home to 16 settlements of internally displaced persons (IDPs).According to International humanitarian organizations, it houses up to 30,000 of those who have escaped violence in southern and central Somalia.
