Somalia recalls its representative to the United Nations in Geneva

Somalia has recalled its representative to the United Nations Office at Geneva Faduma Abdullahi Mohamud (Insania). In a statement issued Saturday, the Foreign Affairs Ministry requested its envoy back to Mogadishu within a week.

The statement did not offer additional details, but the move came after Somalia was among five nations on the United Nations Human Rights Council that abstained from voting a resolution against the Israeli occupation of Golan Heights and urging Israel to comply with the UN resolutions.

The U.N. rights forum adopted an annual resolution on the Syrian Golan, brought by Pakistan on behalf of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), with 26 states in favor, 16 against and 5 abstentions.

This came a day after President Trump signaled that the U.S. might officially recognize the Golan Heights as part of Israel, breaking with decades of American policy.
