Mukhtar Robow, also known as Abu Mansor, may be released from prison. He was accused of arming and funding militants in Baidoa and was arrested last year after attempting to run for south west regional presidency.

Sources have told a local radio station there has been an intense lobbying by MPs, government officials and emissaries from the Igad to secure is release. The move is seen as an attempt to quash the heightened tension and protest among his followers.

He is one of Al-Shabaab’s founders in 2006 having been inspired by Al-Qaeda. He received militant training in Afghanistan where he said he met with Osama Bin Laden days before the 9-11 attacks in the U.S. On September 11, 2001.
