MALAYSIA: Iraqi man charged with murder of Somali woman

KUALA LUMPUR: An Iraqi man was charged in the Ampang Magistrate’s Court on Friday (Feb 18) with the murder of a Somali woman.

Ali Ahmed Abdullah Al-Maghazachi, 25, nodded his understanding after the charges against him were read out by an interpreter in English and Malay in front of Magistrate Normaizan Rahim.

No plea was recorded from the man, as the case is under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

Ali Ahmed was charged with killing Dahabo Omar Ali, under Section 302 of the Penal Code which provides for the death penalty if convicted.

The offence was allegedly committed in front of a premises at Jalan Memanda 1, Taman Dato Ahmad Razali here, at 11.46am, Feb 13.

The case was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Ameera Sam Kamaruddin, while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.

The court set May 9 for mention of the case.

On Monday (Feb 14), the media reported that an Iraqi man who holds a United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) card was arrested in Jalan Ampang Putra, Ampang at 11.20pm (Feb 13) to assist in investigations into the murder of a Somali woman.

The investigation found that the man who worked as a restaurant assistant knew the 28-year-old victim as they both worked at the same restaurant. – Bernama
