Mogadishu, Somalia — The head of the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) has held talks with the European Union’s ambassador to Somalia on efforts to strengthen peace, security and stability in the country.
El Hadji Ibrahima Diene met EU Ambassador Francesca Di Mauro in Mogadishu on Monday, where the two officials discussed ongoing security challenges and cooperation aimed at supporting Somalia’s stabilisation agenda.
According to a statement released after the meeting, discussions focused on AUSSOM’s mandate, support for Somali security forces and the need for closer coordination among international and local partners involved in Somalia’s security and peacebuilding efforts.
Mr Diene expressed appreciation for the European Union’s continued backing of African Union operations and Somali-led initiatives designed to improve security and promote stability across the country.
Ms Di Mauro commended AUSSOM’s contribution to supporting the Federal Government of Somalia, highlighting its role in protecting civilians and key infrastructure. She also praised the mission’s cooperation with Somali security forces in operations targeting the Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab.
The two officials reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration and supporting efforts aimed at achieving sustainable peace and long-term stability in Somalia.
The meeting comes amid renewed efforts by Somalia and its international partners to strengthen national security institutions and advance wider stabilisation and peacebuilding objectives as the country continues its campaign against Al-Shabaab.
