Tehran, IRNA – Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei has condemned Israel’s new reported decision on Somalia, saying the arbitrary action of the Israeli regime is in clear breach of the UN Charter and international law and a violation of the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of the East African nation.
Baqaei issued a statement on Monday, after Tel Aviv announced that it would appoint a diplomatic envoy to Somaliland, a self-declared independent region of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
He warned that the continued Israeli violation of Somalia’s national sovereignty is part of the regime’s conspiracy to destabilize Islamic countries and cause division in the region.
Baqaei reminded the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the African Union, and all world countries of their responsibility to confront the Israeli regime’s lawlessness, expansionism, and interference in the internal affairs of other countries.
The new Israeli move toward “Somaliland” comes months after it officially recognized the volatile Somali region as an independent and sovereign state, sparking global condemnations.
The Somali government then strongly condemned Israel’s decision, calling it an “attack” on the sovereignty of the East African nation, stressing that Somaliland remains an inseparable part of the country.
Somaliland illegally broke away from Somalia in 1991, but it has failed to gain recognition from any United Nations member, except Ethiopia and now the Israeli regime, which is plotting to move Palestinians to this region and have control over the Bab al-Mandab Strait in exchange for recognizing this self-proclaimed republic.
