Nairobi, Kenya — A major diplomatic controversy has emerged involving Somalia’s embassy in Kenya, after the country’s ambassador attended a meeting organised by the Israeli embassy.

Ambassador Jibril Abdull participated in the so-called “Avocado Conference,” despite Somalia having no formal diplomatic relations with Israel. Tensions between the two countries escalated earlier this year when Israel recognised Somaliland as an independent entity, prompting a severing of any potential diplomatic ties.
The ambassador’s attendance has sparked questions over Somalia’s stance towards Israel. Sources close to Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was aware of the ambassador’s participation and reportedly authorised it, effectively giving the green light for Abdull to attend the event.
The development is likely to fuel debate over Somalia’s foreign policy approach in the Horn of Africa and the broader Middle East, where diplomatic sensitivities remain high.
