Mogadishu, Somalia — Somali Ground Forces Commander Sahal Abdullahi Omar on Thursday welcomed an Italian military delegation in Mogadishu to discuss enhanced defence cooperation and support between the two nations.

The delegation, accompanied by Italy’s military attaché to Somalia, met at the headquarters of the Somali National Army (SNA), with senior Somali military officials also in attendance.
Officials said the talks focused on expanding collaboration in areas including military training, logistical support, and capacity-building programmes for Somalia’s armed forces. Both sides also reviewed ongoing initiatives to strengthen the operational capabilities of the SNA as it continues operations against the Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab.
The Italian delegation expressed gratitude for the warm reception and reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to continued support for Somalia’s security institutions.
Italy has long been a key international partner for Somalia, providing assistance in military training, counterterrorism efforts, and the development of the country’s armed forces.
