Baidoa, Somalia — The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, arrived in Baidoa on Friday alongside a high-level delegation, marking a significant visit to the transitional capital of the South West Regional State.
The president was received by the Transitional Leader of the South West administration, the Speaker of the House of the People of the Federal Parliament, senior federal and regional officials, and large crowds of residents who gathered to welcome him.
According to officials, the visit aims to advance key national priorities, including the expansion of social services, promotion of peace and reconciliation, progress toward democratization, drought relief efforts, and improvements in governance across the region.
The trip comes at a sensitive time for the South West administration, following recent developments in which federal forces assumed control of Baidoa’s administrative center and the Federal Government appointed a transitional regional leadership. The move has sparked criticism from opposition politicians and former national leaders, who argue that the intervention could undermine Somalia’s federal system.
During his stay, President Mohamud is expected to hold a series of consultations with transitional regional leaders, traditional elders, security officials, and civil society representatives. Discussions will focus on strengthening security, ensuring the delivery of public services, and advancing plans for universal suffrage elections under the “one person, one vote” framework.
The presidency has emphasized that the visit reflects the government’s commitment to addressing local challenges while working toward broader national goals of peace, stability, and sustainable development.
