Somalia’s prime minister met a Qatari delegation to explore opportunities for joint projects across several sectors with potential for economic growth.

The discussions focused on infrastructure, energy, transport, agriculture and livestock — areas seen as important to Somalia’s economic development.

Focus on investment climate

Both sides stressed the importance of strengthening economic ties and turning existing areas of cooperation into practical investment projects.

They also discussed measures to improve Somalia’s investment environment, including streamlining procedures for the inflow of capital and making it easier for companies and investors to operate in the country.

The Somali government has been seeking to expand economic partnerships with Arab countries, highlighting the country’s strategic position, natural resources and demand for infrastructure and public services.

Officials say greater private-sector involvement could play an important role in supporting economic development and creating new investment opportunities.

Supporting long-term growth

Somalia is increasingly looking to foreign investment to help finance development projects, create employment and improve access to essential services.

Closer economic cooperation with Qatar is expected to form part of those efforts, with the two countries set to continue discussions on potential investments and priority projects.

The talks could provide a basis for further economic cooperation between Mogadishu and Doha and contribute to efforts to promote sustainable growth in Somalia.
