Somalia Announces Return of Food Seized from WFP Warehouse

27 January, 2026

The Federal Government of Somalia has announced the return of food and materials that were previously seized from a World Food Programme (WFP) warehouse located at the Port of Mogadishu.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government confirmed that all seized items have been returned and emphasized its commitment to transparency and accountability moving forward. The ministry said new measures would be put in place to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents in the future.

The seizure of the aid supplies had raised concerns among international partners and humanitarian organizations operating in Somalia. The incident came amid heightened scrutiny of aid management in the country.

The United States has previously stated that the resumption of aid to Somalia would depend on concrete actions taken by the federal government. Washington had suspended all aid assistance, citing concerns over accountability and the handling of humanitarian supplies.

The return of the seized food is seen as a key step toward rebuilding trust with international donors and ensuring the continued delivery of humanitarian assistance to vulnerable communities across Somalia.
