Mogadishu — Somalia’s federal government has approved a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Egypt aimed at strengthening cooperation in maritime transport and port development, officials said.
The agreement was endorsed by the Council of Ministers on Thursday and establishes a framework for collaboration between Egypt’s Ministry of Transport and Somalia’s Ministry of Ports and Marine Transport.
Somalia’s Minister of Ports and Marine Transport, Mohamed Nur, welcomed the approval, describing the agreement as a significant step towards deepening bilateral ties in the maritime sector.
In a statement, Mr Nur said the partnership would strengthen international cooperation in maritime transport and ports while supporting Somalia’s broader development objectives.
“This agreement strengthens international cooperation in maritime transport and ports, advances our strategic priorities, supports the National Transformation Plan (NTP), and reinforces Somalia’s growing role in the regional and global maritime sector,” he said.
The minister also thanked the Council of Ministers for endorsing the MoU, adding that the partnership is expected to contribute to the modernization of Somalia’s maritime infrastructure and expand cooperation with international partners in the ports sector.
The agreement forms part of wider efforts by Somalia to improve its transport infrastructure and increase the capacity of its ports as the country seeks to strengthen regional trade links and attract greater investment in the maritime industry.
