Somalia Condemns Israel’s Appointment of New Ambassador to Somaliland

Mogadishu, Somalia — The Federal Government of Somalia has issued a strong condemnation following Israel’s recent decision to appoint a new ambassador to the self-declared, breakaway region of Somaliland, which remains internationally recognized as part of Somalia.

In an official statement released by the Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government reaffirmed its stance that Somaliland is an integral part of the Republic of Somalia and criticized Israel’s actions as a breach of international law. The Somali government’s position is that any diplomatic relations with Somaliland, a region that unilaterally declared independence in 1991 but has not been recognized by any country, constitutes an illegal act.

“The Federal Government categorically rejects any attempt to grant diplomatic or political recognition to any part of its territory. Somaliland remains an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia. Any attempt to claim it as a separate entity is illegitimate and contrary to international law,” the statement said.

Somaliland, located in the Horn of Africa, declared independence from Somalia in 1991 after the collapse of the central government. However, despite maintaining a functioning government and enjoying a degree of de facto independence, the region has not gained recognition from the United Nations or any foreign governments.

The Somali Ministry’s statement follows growing concern in the region that foreign countries might be bolstering support for Somaliland’s separatist claims. The Somali government has consistently emphasized its sovereignty over the region and continues to call for international support for its territorial integrity.

Israel’s diplomatic move comes at a time when geopolitical dynamics in the Horn of Africa are evolving, with various international powers, including Israel, showing increased interest in the region’s stability and security.

As the situation develops, Somalia’s government has urged the international community to respect its territorial boundaries and adhere to international norms regarding sovereignty and territorial integrity.
