Lascaanod, Somalia — The detention of Somali journalist Abdiqani Abdirahman Mohamed “Dhulmar” has sparked widespread condemnation after images surfaced online showing him in chains inside a police station in Lascaanod.

Dhulmar has reportedly been held for more than 10 days at the city’s central police station, prompting concern from local and international media organizations. The situation escalated in recent hours when photos circulated on social media appeared to show the journalist with his legs shackled while in custody.
Several Somali media groups have denounced both the arrest and the treatment of Dhulmar, calling it a violation of press freedom and human rights.
Khadar Mohamed Farah, the Police Chief of the Sool region under the North-East administration, confirmed the authenticity of the images. He stated that officers present at the scene when the photos were taken have been detained, and an investigation has been launched to determine how the images were captured and shared publicly.
“We are conducting a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident,” Farah said, emphasizing accountability within the police force.
Meanwhile, members of parliament from the North-East administration have criticized the arrest, describing it as unlawful and indicative of growing restrictions on civil liberties. They warned that such actions risk undermining freedom of expression, a right enshrined in the constitution.
The case has intensified debate over press freedom in the region, with advocates urging authorities to ensure the protection of journalists and uphold legal standards.
