11 January, 2025

The foreign ministers of Somalia, Egypt, and Eritrea convened today in Cairo. The meeting resulted in a joint communiqué outlining key steps to implement the directives issued during the recent Asmara Summit by the leaders of the three nations.

The statement emphasized the commitment to promoting security in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region while safeguarding the unity and sovereignty of countries in the area. It also reaffirmed adherence to international law and the principle of non-interference in domestic affairs.

The discussions delved into Somalia’s security challenges, with a particular focus on Egypt’s collaboration with Somalia to support peacekeeping and stabilization efforts. Egypt’s ongoing role in backing the African Union’s mission in Somalia (ATMIS) was also highlighted.

Additionally, the foreign ministers addressed initiatives to strengthen Somalia’s institutional capacity. These measures aim to empower the Somali government to combat terrorism, assert control over its entire territory, and enhance its ability to secure its land and maritime borders.

The meeting also touched on regional dynamics, particularly the evolving situation in Sudan and its impact on neighboring countries. Cooperation among Red Sea nations and continued diplomatic engagement between Somalia, Egypt, and Eritrea were underscored as priorities.

Somalia and Eritrea expressed strong support for Egypt’s candidate for the UNESCO Director-General position, Dr. Khaled Al-Anani, demonstrating the growing alignment of interests among the three countries.

Finally, the ministers agreed to enhance coordination in preparation for the second round of the trilateral summit involving Egypt, Eritrea, and Somalia. The upcoming summit aims to build on the progress made and further solidify their partnership.

This milestone comes as Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is scheduled to visit Addis Ababa later today for discussions with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The talks are expected to center on finalizing agreements from the recent Ankara Summit, according to a statement from Villa Somalia.
