The government of Somalia has announced that at least nine members of the militant group Al-Shabaab were killed during coordinated security operations in the Lower Shabelle region.
According to the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), the operations targeted militants in Kuunyo Barrow and Tugaarey, carried out with support from international partners.
Officials said six militants were killed in Kuunyo Barrow, where forces also destroyed engines used to manufacture explosives, while three others were killed in a separate operation in a forested area of Tugaarey.
The government described the operations as part of ongoing efforts to weaken Al-Shabaab’s capabilities.
The Somali government has intensified its military campaign against Al-Shabaab in recent months, aiming to dismantle the group’s infrastructure and reduce its ability to carry out attacks across the country.
