Somalia: Hassan Sheikh Mohamud Meets Opposition Leaders in Mogadishu Ahead of National Talks

18 February, 2026

The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, met with members of the Future Forum in Mogadishu on Tuesday, in what officials described as a preliminary step toward broader national consultations.

The meeting followed an invitation extended by the Federal Government on January 19, 2026, aimed at bringing together key political stakeholders to discuss pressing national issues. The luncheon, hosted by the President, served as a prelude to the upcoming National Consultation Conference, which is expected to address Somalia’s political, security, and humanitarian challenges.

According to government sources, discussions focused on preparations for elections, strengthening national unity and solidarity, responding to ongoing drought conditions, and intensifying operations against the extremist group commonly referred to by Somali authorities as “Khawarij.”

The gathering was also attended by the Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hamse Abdi Barre, along with cabinet ministers and various members of the Future Forum, an opposition-leaning political platform.

The planned National Consultation Conference is expected to bring together federal and regional leaders, political stakeholders, and civil society representatives to deliberate on the country’s political roadmap and security priorities.

Observers note that the meeting signals an effort by Villa Somalia to ease political tensions and foster dialogue ahead of key electoral decisions. Somalia continues to navigate complex challenges, including electoral reforms, counterterrorism operations, and climate-related humanitarian crises.

Further details regarding the date and structure of the National Consultation Conference are expected to be announced in the coming days.
