Somalia: Mayor arrested over food aid corruptionSomali authorities arrested the mayor of a town in the Central region of the country in a sweeping corruption investigation related to diversion of aid.
The mayor of Bulo-burte district, located in Central Somalia was arrested on Wednesday by the Intelligence agents and Police forces with several businessmen, who have been accused of diverting food aid.
Speaking from Mogadishu, the attorney General of Somalia Ahmed Ali Dahir accused the mayor of being responsible for the diversion of aid which was due to be distributed to the residents.
‘’ Investigations are under way and they will face justice… we will fight against any corruption and won’t allow misuse of aid,’’ the attorney General said in a Press Conference.
Bulo-burte, which is some 200 km north of the capital Mogadishu, has been under a humanitarian crisis situation after al-Shabaab militants who were pushed out from the town last year blocked the roads leading into the towns and refusing transportation of goods.
The Somali government has launched an anti-corruption campaign targeting officials and individuals involved in corruption.
In a recent report, UN officials have revealed that some aid diverted has fallen into the hands of al-Shabaab militants.
