Somalia: Opposition politicians begin meetings in Mogadishu

23 May, 2025

Some of the country’s former leaders, along with opposition politicians, have begun meetings in Mogadishu to discuss the security, political, and transitional situations in Somalia.

Former President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, and former Prime Ministers Hassan Ali Khayre and Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmake, who arrived in Mogadishu, are meeting at the Maallin Nur Center.

These meetings are said to be aimed at coordinating the opposition, unifying their ideas, and strengthening their political plans in the country.

The leaders of the Federal Government of Somalia are insisting on implementing one-person, one-vote elections, which have been opposed by some of the country’s authorities and opposition politicians, at a time when Al-Shabaab has taken over areas not far from the capital Mogadishu.
