Somalia: Puntland official says region has right to consider its political future

Garowe, Somalia — Puntland’s State Minister for Information, Najiib Barkhadle Warsame, has said the regional administration has the right to consider its future, arguing that Somalia’s unity project has been used in ways that have harmed Puntland.

Speaking at a press conference in Puntland’s capital, Garowe, Mr Najiib said Puntland, Somaliland and Jubaland were facing conflict and challenges linked to disagreements over Somalia’s unity.

He said Puntland had the right to determine its own future if, in his view, the project of Somali unity had been misused.

“Unity is being used to fight against us, Somaliland and Jubaland. We have the right to decide our future. If the unity project has been misused, Puntland has the right to consider its future,” Mr Najiib said.

His comments come amid continuing political disagreements over Somalia’s federal system, relations between the federal government and regional administrations, and differing positions on the country’s political future.
