Somalia: Puntland President Arrives in Mogadishu for Key Political Talks

12 May, 2026

Said Abdullahi Deni, the President of Puntland, arrived in Mogadishu on Tuesday alongside a high-level delegation to participate in crucial political consultations aimed at resolving Somalia’s ongoing electoral dispute.

The Puntland leader was received at Aden Adde International Airport by government officials and political representatives ahead of a meeting expected to bring together leaders of the Federal Government of Somalia and opposition groups.

The talks, scheduled to take place in the heavily secured Halane compound in Mogadishu, are being facilitated by representatives of the international community and are expected to focus on electoral arrangements and political consensus-building before the expiration of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s term on May 15.

Opposition leaders participating in the discussions are said to be led by the Somali Future Council, which has been vocal in calling for an inclusive electoral agreement and broader political dialogue.

International partners attending the meeting are expected to listen to the positions of both sides and encourage compromise in an effort to prevent further political tensions and instability in the country. Diplomats and observers have repeatedly warned that failure to reach an agreement could risk plunging Somalia into deeper political uncertainty.

The meeting comes at a critical moment for Somalia as federal and regional leaders continue negotiations over the framework for national elections and the broader transition process.
