Somalia: Puntland President Holds Talks With International Community in Nairobi

23 January, 2026

NAIROBI, Kenya — Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni on Friday met with representatives of the international community in Nairobi to discuss the political situation in Somalia.

President Deni, accompanied by members of the Puntland government council, held separate meetings with ambassadors and representatives from the United Nations, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union. The talks focused on Somalia’s ongoing political developments and efforts to address the country’s governance challenges.

The meetings come amid renewed diplomatic engagement by international partners, who are also expected to hold discussions in Nairobi with leaders from Jubbaland and members of the opposition coalition united under the Somali Future Council.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government of Somalia, based in Mogadishu, has announced plans to initiate a dialogue process aimed at resolving political disagreements. However, the proposed framework has drawn criticism from opposition politicians.

Some leaders opposed to Villa Somalia have argued that the government’s approach does not align with the stance of registered political parties. They maintain that convening a national dialogue is a constitutional responsibility reserved for the president of the country, not the federal government alone.

The developments highlight continued political tensions in Somalia as stakeholders debate the process and leadership of national-level dialogue efforts.
