A shipment reportedly containing Israeli-made military communications equipment arrived in Somalia last month after transiting through Kenya, according to a report published by Al Mayadeen citing unnamed regional sources.
The report alleges that the cargo, weighing around 1,000 kilograms, departed from Tel Aviv and travelled through Nairobi before arriving in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, on 21 June.
According to the sources, the shipment was registered under the designation of a United Nations office and was subsequently received by a UN office in Mogadishu.
The cargo is said to have contained an advanced communications and intelligence system intended for military use. The equipment was reportedly manufactured by Mer Security and Communications, an Israeli company headquartered in Or Yehuda.
Neither the United Nations nor the Somali government had publicly commented on the claims at the time the report was published. The allegations have not been independently verified.
Regional Concerns
The report comes amid heightened scrutiny of alleged Israeli activities in the Horn of Africa, a region of growing strategic significance due to its proximity to key maritime trade routes.
On 25 June, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, leader of Yemen’s Ansarallah movement, warned against what he described as Israeli efforts to establish a presence in Somalia.
Speaking in a televised address, Mr al-Houthi claimed that Israel was seeking to expand its influence over the Gulf of Aden and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a vital shipping corridor linking the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean.
“We are monitoring with great concern the developments on the ground in Somalia and what the Israeli enemy is doing to take control of the Gulf of Aden and Bab al-Mandab,” he said.
Mr al-Houthi also warned that Ansarallah could target what he described as Israeli activities in Somalia and called on countries bordering the Red Sea to adopt a unified stance against perceived Israeli expansion in the region.
The Horn of Africa has become an increasingly important geopolitical arena in recent years, with regional and international powers seeking to secure strategic influence over maritime routes and security interests.
No official evidence has been released publicly to support the claims regarding the reported shipment, and the parties named in the report have not responded publicly to the allegations.
