MOGADISHU, Somalia — The Somali Salvation Forum has announced a new wave of protests in Mogadishu, escalating political tensions ahead of a key political deadline on May 16.
In a statement issued from the Somali capital, the opposition group accused Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the Federal Government of Somalia of employing intimidation, arrests, and political pressure against opposition members and demonstrators.
The Forum said the demonstrations are intended to protest what it described as efforts by the outgoing administration to suppress political dissent. According to the group, the current government’s term is set to expire on May 16.
“The Somali Salvation Forum strongly condemns the actions of the outgoing President to obstruct the peaceful protest organized by the Forum members in Mogadishu yesterday,” the organization said in its statement.
The opposition coalition emphasized that the upcoming protest would remain peaceful and aimed at expressing the political views of opposition groups. It also called on the public to participate in the demonstration.
The announcement comes amid growing uncertainty and heightened political tensions in Somalia, where disputes over governance, elections, and political legitimacy have sparked repeated confrontations between the government and opposition factions.
