16 April, 2026

Mogadishu, Somalia – On April 16, 2026, the Federal Republic of Somalia formalized its diplomatic engagement with the Republic of India as part of a broader strategy to accelerate bilateral economic cooperation.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, H.E. Abdisalam Abdi Ali, officially received the diplomatic credentials of Dr. Adarsh Swaika, the newly appointed Indian Ambassador to Somalia, during a high-level meeting at the Ministry headquarters in Mogadishu.

Ambassador Swaika, who has been operating from India’s regional base in Nairobi, Kenya, will now be at the forefront of a renewed phase of diplomatic and economic integration between the two nations. The ceremony marked the beginning of a new chapter in Somalia-India relations, which both parties are committed to advancing through substantial economic partnerships.

During a closed-door consultative session that followed the credential ceremony, Minister Abdisalam and Ambassador Swaika reviewed the long-standing historical ties between Somalia and India. The discussions focused on transitioning these historical relations into a more dynamic and modernized economic partnership. The two delegations emphasized the importance of converting diplomatic goodwill into concrete and high-impact developmental initiatives.

In line with Somalia’s strategic goal to attract foreign direct investment (FDI), the summit identified key areas for collaboration, particularly in the commercial, technical, and infrastructure sectors. Both governments are committed to launching joint projects that will yield tangible benefits for their citizens and strengthen economic growth.

Minister Abdisalam reaffirmed the Federal Government of Somalia’s commitment to facilitating Ambassador Swaika’s efforts. He emphasized that Somalia would fully cooperate with India in its diplomatic and developmental initiatives, ensuring that the new ambassador’s tenure will yield measurable results and solidify the economic and geopolitical ties between the two nations.

The formalization of these diplomatic relations comes at a time when Somalia is seeking to position itself as a regional leader and hub for international investment and trade, making India an essential partner in the country’s growth trajectory.
