Thousands of Class 8 students have taken to the streets of Mogadishu in celebration after completing their national primary school examinations, marking the end of eight years of formal education.
Large groups of pupils gathered across the Somali capital in scenes of celebration, wearing bright yellow graduation gowns and carrying Somali flags as they marked the milestone.
Many students wrote messages to one another on their gowns, with classmates leaving congratulatory notes and predictions of strong results, including handwritten “A+” marks. Others recorded the occasion on their phones as they celebrated with friends and family.
The Grade 8 national examinations represent the final stage of primary education in Somalia and serve as the pathway into secondary school.
For many students and parents, completing the examinations is regarded as an important educational achievement and a significant step towards future academic opportunities.
