Somalia: U.S. Forces Conduct Strike Targeting ISIS

18 March, 2026

In coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) conducted an airstrike targeting ISIS-Somalia on March 16, 2026.

The United States military says it has carried out an airstrike against Islamic State militants in northern Somalia, in coordination with the Somali government.

US Africa Command (AFRICOM) said the strike took place on 16 March in the Golis Mountains, about 45km (28 miles) south-east of the port city of Bossaso.

In a statement, AFRICOM said the operation targeted fighters linked to the Islamic State group’s Somalia affiliate, often referred to as ISIS-Somalia.

The strike was conducted in partnership with the Federal Government of Somalia and Somali armed forces, the statement added.

AFRICOM said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to weaken the group’s ability to carry out attacks.

“The command, alongside the Federal Government of Somalia and Somali Armed Forces, continues to take action to degrade ISIS-Somalia’s ability to threaten the US homeland, our forces, and our citizens abroad,” the statement said.

No further details were provided about the specific units or assets involved, with officials citing operational security.

It is not yet clear whether there were any casualties resulting from the strike.
