Mogadishu – Somalia’s Federal Cabinet has discussed the ongoing rollout of the country’s third-generation electronic passport (Polycarbonate E-Passport), a project aimed at improving travel, strengthening passport security, and streamlining the issuance process for citizens.
The initiative was among the key issues considered during the Cabinet’s weekly meeting on Thursday, which also reviewed the country’s overall security situation and economic development efforts.
The Ministry of Internal Security presented a detailed report, including statistical data and technical information on the new passport system. According to the ministry, amendments to personal information on issued passports have been completely discontinued in an effort to safeguard the integrity and international credibility of the Somali passport.
The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, also reviewed first and second quarter (Q1 and Q2) ministerial performance reports, as well as plans to advance the government’s electronic Cabinet (E-Cabinet) system. The presentations were delivered by senior officials from the Office of the Prime Minister and technical experts.
The Cabinet also approved, by majority vote, a draft Bill on the Rules of Origin for Goods, which was submitted by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Barre briefed ministers on his recent visit to Somalia’s Northeastern State, where he praised the unity between local residents and the regional administration. He also congratulated the Galmudug regional administration on holding a one-person, one-vote election.
The Prime Minister urged ministers and senior government officials to use Somali passports when travelling internationally, saying the practice would help preserve the dignity and prestige of Somali state institutions. He also commended Second Deputy Prime Minister Jibril Abdirashid Haji for surrendering his foreign passport.
In addition, the Cabinet approved amendments to the appointment of a member of the Judicial Service Commission following a recommendation from the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs. Legal expert Adan Kulow Moallin Qasim was appointed to replace Ali Moallin on the commission.
