6 July, 2025

Somalia’s Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation, Ali Yusuf Ali Hosh, has officially appointed an eight-member committee tasked with overseeing and facilitating the establishment of the SSC-Khatumo administration.

According to a ministerial circular released by the Office of the Minister, the newly formed committee will be responsible for coordinating the administrative setup of the SSC-Khatumo State, which aims to bring governance and services to the region following recent political developments.

The committee will be led by Dr. Ahmednur Mohamed, who has been appointed as Chairman, and Abdinasir Haji Mohamed, serving as Deputy Chairman.

Mandate and Responsibilities
The committee’s primary responsibilities include:

  • Drafting recommendations for the structure and operation of the SSC-Khatumo administration
  • Facilitating coordination between federal and local government entities
  • Advising on the formation of local governance institutions
  • Submitting monthly progress reports to the Ministry of Interior

The circular emphasized that the committee will function under the direct supervision of the Minister and will remain in operation until the full establishment of the SSC-Khatumo administration is completed.

Background and Recent Developments
The appointment of this committee follows a significant visit by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre to Lasanod in April 2025.

The Prime Minister’s visit played a key role in accelerating efforts to formalize the administration in the SSC regions, amid ongoing efforts to stabilize and bring effective governance to areas affected by recent conflict and political uncertainty.

The creation of the SSC-Khatumo administration is viewed as a pivotal step toward strengthening federalism and enhancing local governance within Somalia’s evolving political landscape.
