Mogadishu — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has begun consultations with opposition leaders and former national figures following Israel’s reported decision to recognize Somaliland, a move the Somali government considers a violation of its sovereignty.
According to sources within the federal government, President Hassan Sheikh plans to convene a broad meeting of opposition parties and political stakeholders to formulate a unified national response. The discussions are expected to include former Somali leaders, opposition politicians, and federal member states that have previously disagreed with the president’s policies.
The president’s outreach efforts signal an attempt to build political consensus amid growing concern over what the Somali government views as external interference in its territorial integrity. Somalia has long maintained that Somaliland remains an integral part of the country, despite the region’s self-declared independence in 1991.
Meanwhile, members of both houses of the Federal Parliament are expected to issue a joint statement addressing the political situation and Israel’s decision. Parliamentary leaders are reportedly considering diplomatic and legal responses in coordination with the executive branch.
