Mogadishu — The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) contingent serving under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) has appointed Colonel Jude Rukubya as its new Deputy Contingent Commander, succeeding Colonel Francis Obita Aragamoi following the completion of his tour of duty.

The handover ceremony was officiated by Contingent Commander Brigadier General Jackson Kayanja, who praised Col Aragamoi for his leadership, professionalism and commitment during his deployment.
Brig Gen Kayanja said the outgoing deputy commander had played a key role in several military operations, including Operations Silent Storm, Hidden Sword and Rolling Thunder. He said the operations contributed to the liberation and stabilisation of areas such as Sabiid-Anole, Barrire, Awadglee, Mubarak, Durasalaam, Jerib and Danane.
“Col Aragamoi has performed exceptionally well during his tenure as Deputy Contingent Commander,” Brig Gen Kayanja said. “His leadership in Operations Silent Storm, Hidden Sword and Rolling Thunder greatly contributed to the mission’s success. He has been hardworking, dedicated and cooperative.”
The contingent commander welcomed Col Rukubya to his new role, expressing confidence that his leadership and operational experience would strengthen the UPDF contingent’s contribution to the African Union mission.

Speaking during the ceremony, Col Aragamoi thanked the UPDF leadership for the opportunity to serve in Somalia and expressed appreciation to Brig Gen Kayanja for his guidance throughout the deployment.
“I sincerely thank the UPDF strategic leadership for the opportunity to serve in the mission area,” he said. “I am equally grateful to the Contingent Commander for his guidance and support during my time in office.”

Col Rukubya pledged to build on the achievements of his predecessor by promoting teamwork, discipline and professionalism in support of AUSSOM’s efforts to help restore lasting peace and stability in Somalia.

The ceremony also marked the handover of the office of Contingent Operations Officer, with Lieutenant Colonel Garvas Kabagambe transferring responsibilities to Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Tibenda Uma Savimbi.

Senior and junior officers, together with non-commissioned officers serving under the UPDF contingent in Somalia, attended the event.
