US conducts airstrike targeting al-Shabaab in Somalia

The United States has carried out an airstrike targeting al-Shabaab in Somalia, according to US Africa Command (AFRICOM).

8 September, 2026

The strike was conducted on 4 September 2026 in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, AFRICOM said.

It took place about 175km (109 miles) west of the capital, Mogadishu, as part of ongoing joint efforts to weaken the militant group’s operational capabilities.

AFRICOM said it was continuing to work with the Somali federal government and Somali Armed Forces to reduce al-Shabaab’s ability to threaten US forces and American citizens abroad.

The command did not provide details about the military units or aircraft involved, citing operational security concerns.

Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda-linked militant group, remains one of Somalia’s most significant security threats. Somali and international forces have continued military operations against the group as part of efforts to improve security in the country.

AFRICOM said the latest strike formed part of those ongoing efforts to disrupt al-Shabaab’s operations.
