Somalia: Al Shabaab warns Mogadishu residentsSomali Militant group has warned Mogadishu local residents to stay away from Government and international organization areas, following a deadly car bomb attack in a Mogadishu popular hotel.
On Sunday, a truck full of explosives detonated at the gate of Aljazeera hotel, which is sheltered by government officials and foreign dignitaries, killing at least 13 people. Most of the dead have been confirmed to be civilians.
Al Shabaab which claimed the responsibility of the attack, warned residents in Mogadishu to stay away from government bases, including hotels they said worked as government ‘’offices’’.
‘’All Mogadishu residents should bear in mind to keep away from Government bases, so that they won’t be harmed during attacks against our enemy,’’ said the spokesman of the group, Ali Dheere.
Al Shabaab insurgents have staged a string of assaults in their fight to overthrow the country’s internationally-backed government. They have targeted hotels, the international airport, Villa Somalia, a United Nations compound and restaurants in a bid to discredit claims by the authorities and AU troops that they are winning the war.
In most of the attacks carried out by the militants in Mogadishu, the casualties of the civilians are higher than the government officials.
Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud condemned the attack saying: ‘’our resilience will triumph over your brutality.”
