Unknown gunmen have shot and killed a Turkish airline Officer in the Somali capital, Mogadishu on Tuesday afternoon, Official confirmed.
Saadettin Doğan, who was identified as an airline security officer was assassinated in one of the capital’s busy roads as he was driving.
According to reports and witnesses, the gunmen opened fire at his car and none of his drivers nor was translator, who accompanied him were hurt in the incident.
Turkish Embassy in Mogadishu and the Foreign Affairs ministry have confirmed the death of the officer. But motives behind his assassination are still unclear and no group has come forward to claim.
It is the latest in a string of attacks in the capital, which is plagued by lawlessness after years of conflict.
The attack comes few days after armed militants launched a deadly attack on the country’s Parliament, which resulted to the resignation of the National Security Minister.
Turkey’s involvement in Somalia emerged in 2011 when Prime Minister Recep Tayyib Erdogan paid a rare visit to Mogadishu, becoming the first non-African leader to visit the war-torn city for two decades.
It reopened its embassy in November 2011, becoming the only country outside the region to have a functioning mission in the impoverished war-torn country.
Since then Turkey has provided $400 million in aid to the country building hospitals, schools and other structures and educating students in Turkey with scholarships.
