Horseed Media: Championing Peace, Development, and Information in Somalia
Horseed Media is a prominent Somali radio station and news website, proudly owned by Horseed Media Ltd. Established on April 5, 2008, by a dynamic and intellectual group of Somali Diaspora residing in the Netherlands and Finland, Horseed Media embodies its namesake, which means “leader.” The primary mission of Horseed is to advocate for peace and development within Somalia while delivering current affairs news to the public in a balanced and unbiased manner.
Since its inception, Horseed has made significant contributions to social and economic development and has played a pivotal role in advancing media skills and technology within the Somali community.
Our regular weekly radio programs, which are also accessible on our website, encompass a wide range of topics, including women and family issues, peace, health, human rights, business, religion, sports, literature, culture, tradition, media, and entertainment. In 2008, Horseed provided training to over 10 radio journalists, equipping them with contemporary radio journalism skills.
Our dedicated team consists of approximately 15 individuals, with about 10 based in Somalia and the remainder located in Kenya, the EU, and the US.
A Trailblazing Radio Streaming Experience
Horseed Media proudly made history as the first Somali radio station to stream its content on the internet, allowing global audiences to tune in to our daily radio programs live via the web.
Today, Horseed boasts over 10,000 daily unique visitors to its website and approximately 300,000 FM radio listeners in Bosaso, North Eastern Somalia, covering an impressive area of more than 100 square kilometers.
Committed to Excellence
At Horseed Media, we are unwavering in our commitment to upholding the highest standards while continuing our mission to promote peace, social development, and economic progress in Somalia through our media initiatives.
Nurturing Emerging Journalists
Horseed Media takes great pride in supporting and nurturing the aspirations of young Somalis interested in the field of media. Through comprehensive training programs, we empower them to become the journalists of tomorrow in Somalia.
Collaboration Through Modern Media
Leveraging modern media technology, Horseed Media collaborates with freelance journalists across the country and beyond. Through these extensive journalist networks, the Horseed Media website has emerged as a leading source of information for Somalis both inside and outside Somalia.
In a Challenging Environment
Somalia has endured a lack of a functioning government for nearly two decades, making it one of the most perilous places for journalists to operate. Despite the daily obstacles faced by journalists in Somalia, Horseed Media continues to broadcast peace-building and social awareness programs, contributing significantly to reconciliation and the overall development of Somalia.
A Leading Voice in Somali Media
In 2008, Horseed Media achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Somali media entity selected to participate in the United Nations Journalist Program—an annual program for broadcasters and journalists from developing countries held at the UN Headquarters in New York, established by the General Assembly in 1980. This program offers journalists from developing nations an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the workings of the United Nations and report on UN activities for their respective news organizations.
During the 63rd session of the General Assembly, Horseed Media represented Somali media at the UN Headquarters. Our representative had the honor of meeting and interviewing the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, along with numerous other key figures within the UN Secretariat, including the heads of UN agencies.
At Horseed Media, we remain steadfast in our dedication to promoting peace, development, and informed dialogue in Somalia and beyond, using the power of media as our tool for positive change.
