ATMIS was compelled to release the statement following allegations in Somali media that its police component was involved in organizing upcoming Jubaland elections
The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has expressed concern over local media reports claiming its police forces are involved in providing security at polling stations in Jubaland.
In a statement released today, ATMIS emphasized its neutral stance in the ongoing conflict between Jubaland and the Federal Government of Somalia, calling for a peaceful resolution to the political dispute between both parties.
“The African Union Mission in Somalia urges all relevant parties, including the Federal Government and the Jubaland administration, to engage in dialogue to end the political conflict in order to achieve a meaningful and inclusive resolution to the conflict,” the statement read.
ATMIS reaffirmed its commitment to fulfilling its mandate in supporting Somalia’s state-building process, including efforts to transition towards one-person, one-vote elections through an inclusive and participatory process.
The statement comes as tensions rise in Kismayo, which is scheduled to host the Jubaland presidential election tomorrow, Monday.
